Are you registered to vote for the upcoming election?

Deadline

The deadline to register for the November 8 election is October 11, 2016.  The registration must be received by the County Registrar by that date to qualify as a registered voter for the November election.  Early voting begins October 24.

New and Updated Registration

Leander spans Travis and Williamson Counties.  You must register and vote in the county in which you live.  For Travis County the Tax Office is the official home of the registrar and voter registration.  If you have not registered to vote in Travis County yet, you can download an application at https://tax-office.traviscountytx.gov/voters/voter-registration.  For Williamson County you can download an application from the Elections Administrator at http://www.wilco.org/CountyDepartments/Elections/RegistertoVote/tabid/3674/language/en-US/Default.aspx.

If you are already registered in the county and only need to change your name or address within the county, you may either use the application form from the county or complete an online change through the Texas Secretary of State website https://txapps.texas.gov/tolapp/sos/SOSACManager.  For the online update you will need your driver license or state ID number, social security number, and voter ID number (VUID) that is found on your Voter Registration Certificate or through an online search (see the next section).

You may also register to vote through the DMV when you get your driver's license, but there have been cases in which the voter registration link between the DMV and the county fails to process so it is advisable to verify the registration before October 11 so you can add or update through the county directly if necessary.

If you received a blue and white Voter Registration Certificate in the mail at your correct address and showing it is valid through November, you should be registered to vote in the county.   If you have not received the certificate, it is advisable to verify your registration.

Verify Your Registration

You can verify that you are actively registered in the county at your current address by checking the county website.  For Travis County the website is http://www.votetravis.com/vexpress/display.do.  For Williamson County the verification website is http://apps.wilco.org/elections/default.aspx.  If you do not locate your registration, you may add or update the registration through the registration process described in the previous section.

Outdated Registration due to Move

By law you may only vote in the county in which you are registered.  If you moved within the county and did not update your registration by the deadline, you may vote in the election but you will be asked to update your address by submitting a Statement of Residence and you will be given a ballot based on the address where you are registered.   If you moved within Texas and are registered in another county but did not register in the new county until after the deadline, you may be able to vote a "limited ballot" in the new county, but it must be done by mail or in person at the registrar's office during Early Voting only.   If you attempt to vote a regular ballot in a county where you are not registered, you will not be permitted to vote in that county.  It is best to ensure that your registration is accurate prior to the October 11 deadline.
Provisional Voting
If at the polling location your registration information is not located but you believe you are properly registered, you may vote provisionally.  A provisional ballot will be reviewed on a later date by an election judge after the County Registrar checks the registration.  Having your valid Voter Registration Certificate with you is the best way to ensure that your registration is properly located at the polling place.
Name Match
An exact match of the name on the voter registration and the identification presented at the polling place is not required, but it must be substantially similar.  Substantially similar allows for reasonable variations such as common nicknames, initials, transpositions, misspellings, and former names.  A voter may optionally update the name on the registration via an affidavit form available at the polling location or as previously described.
